What RAA approved really means: the five standards our detailing had to pass
Detailing needs no licence in South Australia, so anyone can call themselves professional. The RAA assessment is one of the few checks an outside body actually runs.

Most South Australians grew up with the RAA. It is the yellow van that turns up when your battery dies in a Bunnings car park. The Royal Automobile Association has been part of driving in this state since 1903, and around 800,000 South Australians are members.
Fewer people know it also runs an approved repairer network. Just over 400 businesses across the state that the RAA has vetted and continues to audit: crash repairers, mechanics, auto electricians, and a much smaller group in speciality categories including automotive detailing.
Getting in is not a matter of paying a fee and downloading a logo. Plenty of badges in this trade were invented for marketing. This one is assessed before it is granted and checked afterwards. We went through the process, so here is what a detailer has to pass, because when you are comparing car detailing businesses in Adelaide this is one of the few independent quality signals that carries weight.
The five standards behind the badge
1. Proven knowledge, skills and equipment
Before approval the RAA assesses whether a business genuinely has the knowledge, skills and equipment to work at a high standard in its category. For detailing that meant they looked at the workshop, the machines, the products and the people. Not the website. Not the Instagram. The actual operation.
Detailing carries no licensing requirement in South Australia, so anyone can call themselves professional. An assessment of real capability by an organisation with no interest in flattering us is worth more than anything we could say about ourselves.
2. Guaranteed workmanship
Every RAA Approved Repairer must guarantee the quality of its workmanship. Guarantee is the RAA’s word, and it is a condition of staying in the network.
For a detailer that matters more than in most trades. Once a nano ceramic coating is on, you cannot judge the preparation underneath it. Poor decontamination or rushed panel work stays invisible until the coating starts failing months later. A workmanship guarantee backed by an outside body means the accountability outlasts the handover.
3. A fair pricing policy
Approved Repairers commit to written estimates and to never charging for work that has not been done or is not needed. In practice that shapes how we quote. You get a written price based on an inspection of your vehicle, and if we recommend correction before coating we show you why on your own paintwork rather than adding it to every invoice by default.
4. A code of practice written for the category
There is no single generic code every business signs. Each repairer follows the RAA Code of Practice for its own category, so a crash repairer and a detailer are held to standards written for their actual work. Ours were assessed against detailing. That is also why the yellow RAA signage names the category a business is approved for, and why it is worth checking the category matches the work you are booking.
5. Ongoing audits
Approval is not permanent. To stay accredited a repairer must maintain equipment and qualification standards and undergo periodic audits, so the RAA is checking that the business it approved three years ago is still the business operating today. Plenty of accreditations in this trade are pay once, display forever. This one can be taken away, which is the entire point.
| RAA standard | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Assessed capability | The workshop, equipment and skills were verified by the RAA, not self-claimed |
| Workmanship guarantee | The quality of the work is guaranteed as a condition of accreditation |
| Fair pricing policy | Written estimates, and no charges for work that was not needed or not done |
| Category code of practice | Standards written for detailing, rather than a generic promise |
| Regular audits | Standards are re-checked over time, so the badge stays earned |
What it means if you are not a member
You do not need to be an RAA member to book an Approved Repairer. Anyone can, and everyone gets the same standards. Membership adds two things: the RAA can step in as a mediator if you are ever unsatisfied, and members receive discounts at participating repairers.
The mediation part deserves a moment. If a job goes wrong with an operator you found through a search, your recourse is a strongly worded review. With an Approved Repairer, an organisation of 800,000 members has put its name behind the business. In 28 years Ceramicar has never needed a mediator. Being in a network where one exists still changes how every business in it behaves.
| Any customer | RAA member | |
|---|---|---|
| RAA-verified standards and audits | Yes | Yes |
| Workmanship guarantee | Yes | Yes |
| Written estimate and fair pricing | Yes | Yes |
| RAA mediation if unsatisfied | No | Yes |
| Discount on ceramic coating packages | No | 10% off |
Verifying it takes two minutes
Do not take any business’s word for its accreditation, ours included. The RAA runs a repairer locator on raa.com.au where you can search by service type and suburb, and the yellow Approved Repairer sign on a workshop states the approved category. If a detailer claims RAA approval and does not appear in that locator, you have learned something about their other claims too. Run every business on your shortlist through it before you commit.
What the accreditation means when we coat your car
A quality nano ceramic coating gives the paint a hard, glossy layer that blocks the UV hammering Adelaide cars from November through March, stops bird droppings and tree sap etching in, and roughly halves your washing time because grime struggles to stick. Done properly it protects resale, since faded swirled paint is the first thing a buyer haggles over.
Every one of those benefits depends on preparation you will never see. Decontamination, correction, a dust-controlled cure. Coating with an RAA Approved Repairer puts that invisible work behind a workmanship guarantee, a written quote, an audited workshop and a mediator you can call. The coating protects your paint. The accreditation protects your money.
The member offer
We did not chase RAA approval for the sign. An independent body checking the work keeps us at the standard customers are paying for.
RAA members get 10% off all ceramic coating packages here. Protecting a new car before its first summer or bringing a daily driver back, mention your membership when you book and the discount applies to the coating package.
Book a free paint inspection at Windsor Gardens on 1300 605 531. We look over the car under proper lighting, talk through the right level of protection for how you use it, and put the price in writing. That written quote is not us being polite. It is one of the standards we are audited on.
